Your Home Is Buttoned Up for Winter, But What’s Trapped Inside With You?

Howdy, Southlake neighbors and fellow Dragon fans! Your local comfort crew from Christmas Air Conditioning and Plumbing is back, and today we’re talking about something that hits different in winter: the air inside your sealed-up home.

When temperatures drop, we button up the house. Windows stay shut. Doors stay closed. The furnace runs constantly. Great for staying warm. Not so great for air quality.

Here’s the thing: that same air keeps recirculating. Dust, pet dander, cooking fumes, cleaning product residue, whatever the kids dragged in on their shoes. It’s all just spinning around your home, passing through your lungs over and over.

Why Winter Air Quality Takes a Hit

  •  Homes are sealed tight with no fresh air exchange
  •  Furnaces run constantly, pushing dust through ductwork
  •  Dry heated air irritates sinuses and skin
  •  Holiday gatherings mean more people, more germs, more odors

Signs Your Indoor Air Needs Attention

  •  Waking up congested or with a scratchy throat
  •  Static electricity everywhere (a sign of overly dry air)
  •  Dust accumulating faster than usual
  •  Lingering cooking or pet odors that won’t clear out
  •  Family members with increased allergy or asthma symptoms

Quick Wins to Breathe Easier

Check your filter. This is your furnace’s first line of defense. A clogged filter means restricted airflow and more particles circulating. Check monthly during heavy use. We recommend MERV 8-11 for most homes. Higher isn’t always better since it can restrict airflow if your system isn’t designed for it.

Consider a humidifier. North Texas winter air is dry, and heated air is even drier. A whole-home humidifier adds moisture back, helping with dry skin, static, and those morning sore throats.

Think about duct cleaning. Your ductwork is like the lungs of your home. Years of dust, pet hair, and debris build up inside. Every time your furnace kicks on, that stuff circulates. If it’s been 3-5 years (or you can’t remember), it’s time.

Level Up: UV Lights and Air Scrubbers

For families dealing with allergies, asthma, or just wanting the cleanest air possible:

  •  Germicidal UV lights install inside your HVAC system and neutralize bacteria, viruses, and mold spores as air passes through
  •  Air scrubbers actively clean the air throughout your entire home, removing pollutants and odors at the source

These aren’t just for hospitals anymore. They’re becoming standard upgrades for homeowners who take indoor air seriously.

One More Thing: Carbon Monoxide Safety

Your furnace burns fuel to create heat. A cracked heat exchanger or blocked vent can leak carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas. Make sure your CO detectors are working, and consider a furnace inspection if your system is over 10 years old.
