Children Dental Health Month
February is National Children Dental Health Month. NCDHN began in February 1941, at a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and another one-week event in Akron, Ohio. This event grew from two cities to nationwide.
On February 8, 1949 the ADA held its first national observance day of Children Dental Health. It went from a single day event to a week-long event in 1955, then in 1981 the program extended to a month long!
During the month of February, Dentists, Hygienists, Teachers, Parents and the ADA all come together to teach children the importance of Oral Health and how to properly take care for them.
Encouraging a routine at home is a great way to start with good habits. Brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing at night is the first step. Replacing children’s toothbrushes after they are sick or frayed will prevent gum damage. Having a healthy diet affects the mouth, eating foods like fruits and vegetables and drinking water are better for your mouth then eating candy and snacks.
Children that are in sports should be encouraged to drink water rather than sugar drinks and to wear a mouth guard to prevent injuries. Also, going to regular dental visits twice a year is recommended.
To learn more, visit the ADA website for additional resources. There you will find flyers, coloring sheets, brushing calendars and more. This will aid in ensuring children are educated on the importance of Oral Health.
