Kitchen Trends That Actually Last
When people ask me about kitchen trends, I always tell them the same thing. Trends change, but a kitchen should last.
Painted cabinets have been popular for a while, and they still look great, but they usually start to show wear after about 10 years. Stained wood tends to hold up better and gives you a more timeless look. The type of wood matters too. Hardwoods like oak and maple are much more durable, while softer woods can dent and show damage more easily. A lot of homeowners like to mix the two by doing a painted island and stained cabinets everywhere else. That gives you the best of both worlds. Even when painted cabinets were at their peak, a good portion of my jobs were still stained wood, and I am seeing more people head back in that direction now.
Countertops are another area where I see people thinking more long term. Hard surface products continue to make the most sense. They hold up well and just work for everyday life. Formica has started to lose traction because the cost and durability do not really line up anymore.
When it comes to hardware, I always encourage people to think classic. Brushed nickel and chrome have been around forever and still look good. Black hardware had its moment, and gold is popular right now, but those trends tend to fade. Stainless steel is still the safest choice for appliances because it works with just about any style.
Tile backsplashes have been a staple for years, and for good reason. They are easy to clean, handle moisture well, and fit almost any kitchen design.
Overall, I am seeing more homeowners move toward timeless choices instead of chasing trends. In the long run, those are the kitchens people are happiest with.
