Seeking a Companion? Think Both Dates and M.A.T.E.S.

February, St. Valentine’s month, highlights romance. But for those of you still seeking a partner and struggling to find one, perhaps this memorable anagram will help.

Finding a companion or mate is less about “who” and more about “you.” So take the following steps to search and improve yourself to prepare you to find a suitable love mate.

M. is for ME. Do a self-review by pretending to be someone wanting to date you. Write down your likes, dislikes, & things you would like to change. Then change them. Work towards confidence and a positive attitude/demeanor. If you do not love yourself, why would you expect someone else to love you?

A. is for ACTION. Go. See. Do. Attend events, take a class, take a trip. You need to participate and explore; no one will come knocking at your door.

T. is for TEST. Force yourself to move outside your comfort zone to experience new social situations. Write down what you learned. Experimenting in this way will reduce social anxiety by improving your social skills and confidence for your next event.

E. is for EMPATHY. When meeting someone new (as a potential mate), be empathetic with your list of expected criteria. Do not relax your standards, just your expectations. Do not be too critical or reject too quickly. Remember, in our each of our book of life we have all had to overcome some struggles, but we can always begin a new chapter.

S. is for SO WHAT? So what if they stutter, dress poorly, have crooked teeth or live with their mother?  Don’t go by looks. They may be kind, gracious and loving people, with whom you may forge a lasting bond.

So, after completing these 5 steps, hopefully you will all be better equipped to find your M. A. T. E. S.
