The Beast Called Yeast: A Berthoud Brewing Company Perspective
At Berthoud Brewing Company, as our front of house focuses on the party, the production area focuses on the quality of our beer and the science behind it. As a biochemist with a bachelor’s from New Mexico State University, I take great pride in what we make for our patrons and our community.
Some of the things I find most interesting about my profession are all based on science. Out of the four primary ingredients to beer (malt, hops, water, & yeast), I probably find yeast to be the most important. First of all, it takes the sugars from malt to produce two very important aspects of beer: carbonation, and everyone’s favorite, alcohol. Along with performing this wonder of nature and science, yeast also is a very heavy flavor influencer. When beer contains the proper amount of yeast, with hundreds to thousands different commercial yeast strains available to brewers, it can create many flavors including various fruit flavors like banana and green apple, and spicy flavors resembling clove or pepper.
Our brewery also has a very strong focus of the quality of our service and the food we make and serve. Our Loveland location can seem slightly confusing or even intimidating to new comers, but our staff is always happy to help guide our guests. With two kitchens and patios with food and drinks, we invite people to walk around, enjoy the food of their choosing, and have a seat wherever they feel comfortable.
Our lower level gives our guests choices from over twenty specialized pizzas (crafted with house made dough with our in-house brewer’s yeast). With sandwiches, appetizers, and desserts also on the lower-level menu, we also offer a different menu on our upper level. The upper level offers a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and burgers. With all twenty brewed-on-site beers, and the same cocktail menu on both levels, we are happy to welcome old friends, and new faces every day.
Our current fun activities involve Trivia night every other Monday at 6:30pm, and Bingo every other Wednesday at 6pm. Hops and Hot Rods will be starting again the first Friday in May, welcoming anyone with a car they’d like to share with us, and anyone who’d love to look at or talk cars.
Our management team would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our guests, but also the members of our staff. We sincerely appreciate all of our cooks, bartenders, and second brewer.
