The Biggest Winter Claim Risks—and How to Prevent Them
Winter can be tough on homes, and the most common insurance claims are preventable with some preparation. Water damage and freezing claims (including burst pipes) have an average claim cost of $12,500. Annual water damage claims from all causes exceed $13 billion in the U.S. alone. From what has been shown in recent weather reports and insurance trends, here are some clear practical tips on how to avoid such claims.
FROZEN OR BURST PIPES
To avoid claims related to frozen or burst pipes:
- Keep your home heated consistently, even when you’re away.
- Insulate exposed pipes (basements, attics, and garages).
- Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold.
- Know where your main water shut-off valve is.
ICE DAMS AND ROOF LEAKS
Ice dams form when melting snow refreezes at the roof edge, backing water up under shingles. To prevent ice dams and roof leaks:
- Keep your attic well-insulated and ventilated.
- Clear gutters before winter.
- Use a roof rake to remove heavy snow after storms.
GENERAL WEATHER DAMAGE
Wind and hail are consistently among the top winter claim drivers. To prevent wind and hail claims:
- Trim branches near your home.
- Secure outdoor furniture and decorations.
- Inspect your roof for loose shingles before winter hits.
WATER DAMAGE
Winter storms often lead to flooding, leaks, and moisture issues. To prevent water damage:
- Seal cracks around windows and doors.
- Make sure sump pumps are working.
- Check basement walls for moisture before freezing temps arrive.
SLIP AND FALL LIABILITY CLAIMS
Icy walkways can lead to liability claims if someone gets hurt on your property. To prevent slips and falls on your property:
- Shovel promptly after snowfalls.
- Use ice melt on walkways and steps.
- Fix uneven or cracked paths before winter.
A small amount of preventative maintenance and preparedness can go a long way to ensure your home and property are safe from claims and costly headaches in the winter months.
