Why Winter Is the Smart Season for a Kitchen Remodel

When most homeowners think about remodeling, spring usually comes to mind. But according to Kevin Hood, owner of Hood Remodeling, Inc. and Hood Custom Home Design, winter may actually be the smartest time to start planning a kitchen renovation.

With more than 37 years of experience and a reputation as one of the South Shore’s most trusted remodeling professionals, Kevin recently shared his insights on WATD’s Expert Insights radio show. His message was clear: the best renovation projects start long before warm weather arrives.

Kevin is a familiar name across the South Shore and is known not only for his craftsmanship but also for his deep commitment to the community. A Plymouth native, he was named Businessperson of the Year by the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce and received the 2025 Phyllis Hughes Award for his dedication to giving back. Hood Remodeling is a true family-run business. Kevin works alongside his daughter Kylie who is the office manager, and his son Devin who oversees projects in the field.

“Without my family and my team, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Kevin. “The credit always goes back to the people behind the scenes.”

While Hood Remodeling handles kitchens, bathrooms, decks, and additions, one of its most valuable differentiators is expertise in historic homes dating back to the 1600s and 1700s.

“These houses weren’t built like homes today,” said Kevin. “Nothing is level, nothing is straight, and you need the experience to make modern kitchens function properly without losing the character of the home.”

This knowledge also benefits modern renovations, ensuring structure, flow, and function are seamless.

Winter is an ideal season for kitchen remodeling because it gives homeowners time to plan thoughtfully.

“Kitchens don’t happen overnight,” said Kevin. “From design to materials to construction, you’re looking at anywhere from eight to twelve weeks depending on the scope. If you want to enjoy your new kitchen by spring or summer, you should be starting now.”

Planning in winter avoids spring backlogs, allows for careful design decisions, and helps families prepare for temporary disruption. Kevin also notes that post-Covid pricing has stabilized, making now a good time to invest.

A major advantage of Hood Remodeling is its design-build approach. Through Hood Custom Home Design, clients access in-house designers, custom cabinetry, materials, and construction which are all coordinated by one team. At their 3,000-square-foot showroom at 114 Long Pond Road in Plymouth, homeowners can see, touch, and compare cabinets, countertops, tile, flooring, and finishes in person.

“Trying to design a kitchen online or over FaceTime just doesn’t work,” said Kevin. “Colors, textures, and finishes look completely different in your own home.”

There is no charge for design consultations, and clients work with a designer from initial ideas through final installation.

Kevin’s advice to homeowners: slow down and visualize the end result.

“Take the samples home. Look at them in your lighting. Sit back and think about how you really use your kitchen,” he said.

Careful planning upfront ensures satisfaction and a functional, beautiful space for years to come.

Homeowners interested in a kitchen remodel this winter can visit hoodremodelinginc.com or hoodcustomhomes.com, please call (508) 747-4153, or stop by the showroom at 114 Long Pond Road in Plymouth.

As Kevin puts it, “If you take the time now, you’ll enjoy the results for decades to come.”
