Why Winter Is the Smartest Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment
When most families think about orthodontic treatment, they tend to picture summer, when school is out and schedules feel a little more flexible. But in my experience, winter, and February in particular, is often the smartest and smoothest time to begin orthodontic care.
One of the biggest reasons is routine. By February, families have settled into a rhythm. School schedules are steady, extracurricular activities are familiar, and life feels a little more predictable than it does during the start of the school year or the busy summer months. That consistency makes it easier to attend regular appointments and adjust comfortably to treatment.
By the way, did you know that February happens to be National Children’s Dental Health month? Maybe that’s good inspiration and a reason to get checked out. Call it a sign.
Winter is a great time for parents to plan ahead. Orthodontics is rarely an urgent decision, and that’s a good thing. Taking a proactive approach allows families to understand what’s happening with their child’s bite, jaw development, and spacing. From there, we work together to map out the best timing for treatment. In many cases, starting earlier can actually make treatment simpler and more efficient in the long run. Age 7 is the age the American Association of Orthodontics and we at ARCH recommend the first orthodontic evaluation occur. It is a critical age to be evaluated due to the expected transition of teeth and expression of particular growth patterns that pediatric dentists and pediatricians regularly do not consider in their evaluations.
This is why it is critical to see the orthodontist and you do not need a referral to do so! Growth patterns tell us a great deal about the future development and we can be very prepared and supportive of other systems such as airway and breathing function. Snoring is a good clue that arch development may be necessary to improve systemic health.
One thing I always like parents to know is that orthodontics isn’t just about straight teeth. Proper alignment plays a role in long-term oral health, jaw function, and even breathing and speech development. An evaluation doesn’t mean treatment has to start immediately, it simply provides information. February is a perfect time for that conversation because there’s room to plan without feeling rushed.
From a practical standpoint, winter also tends to be a calmer season in terms of family travel and schedule disruptions. That means fewer missed appointments and more consistent progress. Orthodontic treatment works best when it’s steady, and small, regular adjustments add up over time.
As an orthodontist, one of the things I enjoy most is helping families feel comfortable and informed. I know orthodontic care can feel like a big step, especially for parents who haven’t been through it before. My goal is always to make the process feel approachable, manageable, and tailored to each child’s needs.
If you’ve been wondering whether this might be the right year to explore orthodontic care for your child, winter is a great time to start that conversation. A thoughtful plan now can lead to a smoother experience, and a confident smile, down the road.
Sometimes the best time to begin isn’t when life slows down completely. It’s when routines are in place, expectations are clear, and there’s space to plan thoughtfully. That’s what makes winter such a smart start.
