Winter Roof Check-In: A Few Things Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore

Winter has a way of revealing just how strong (or not-so-strong) your roof really is. Between freezing temperatures, snow, and moisture, this season can quietly stress your home’s first line of defense. The good news? A little attention now can prevent major headaches later.

Let’s start with something simple- a roof inspection. You don’t need to climb up there yourself, but having a professional take a look can make a big difference. We often spot loose shingles, worn flashing around vents and chimneys, or small problem areas that homeowners wouldn’t notice from the ground. Those minor issues can quickly turn into leaks once freezing and thawing kick in.

Next up: gutters. I know, nobody loves cleaning them – but clogged gutters can cause ice dams. That’s when melting snow has nowhere to go and refreezes along the edge of your roof. Over time, that ice can force water back under your shingles and into your home. Keeping gutters clear helps water move away like it should.

Another thing people don’t always think about is what’s happening inside the attic. Good insulation and ventilation help keep temperatures steady up there. When warm air escapes through your roof, it melts snow unevenly, which leads to refreezing – and yep, more ice dams. A balanced attic setup protects both your roof and your energy bill.

After a heavy snowfall, it’s also smart to keep an eye on snow buildup. While most roofs are designed to handle winter loads, excessive accumulation can add unnecessary stress. If you’re concerned, use proper tools or call in professionals – safety always comes first.

And finally, trust your gut. If something looks off, water stains appear, or you hear dripping you can’t explain, don’t wait. Early repairs are almost always easier – and less expensive – than fixing major damage later.

At Over the Top Restoration, we believe your roof should give you confidence year-round. Winter can be tough, but with a little care and the right support, your home will stay protected through every storm.
