Behind the Castle Walls: Storybook Land’s Busy Winter Season
“So, you get a nice long break, huh?”
“Do you go to Florida after you close?”
“Time for vacation!”
Those phrases are heard quite often during the final days of Storybook Land’s operating season. Things slow down, Santa has returned to the North Pole, and guests and Season Passholders squeeze in one last visit before the traditional December 30th closure.
It’s often assumed that once the gates close, Storybook Land is locked up tight until spring. In reality, the off-season is one of the busiest times of the year, with weeks of important work ahead.
So, what really happens during the winter months?
Weather permitting, Christmas decorations begin to come down and are carefully stored away. Every light display, cord, and ornament is labeled and packed with care. This process alone takes weeks and usually involves a dedicated crew assigned to “de-Christmasing” the park.
Each ride also follows its own detailed winter maintenance procedures. Many parts are sent out for non-destructive testing, while vehicles and components are thoroughly serviced. Once all required maintenance is completed, the rides are reassembled and prepared to await their annual state inspections.
Behind the scenes, office staff stay busy booking school and summer camp trips, birthday parties, and organizing events such as the annual Open Interview Day and Employee Orientation. Operating schedules are reviewed and posted, paperwork from the previous season is filed, and special events are planned. Software and hardware systems are updated and tested as needed. The off-season is also a valuable time for professional development—many staff members attend online seminars, test for certifications, and complete CPR, First Aid, and Fall Protection training.
Then there’s the cleaning. Every storybook house, trash can, restroom, and kitchen is scrubbed and detailed from top to bottom. Storybook Land is known for its exceptional cleanliness, and the off-season allows for an even deeper level of care and attention.
Snow can make Storybook Land look more whimsical and beautiful than ever, but a winter storm can quickly bring progress to a halt. When snow arrives, all efforts shift to plowing, shoveling, and de-icing the park from top to bottom, including behind-the-scenes areas
But when the ground begins to thaw and the first hints of spring arrive, work shifts to touching up paint and preparing lawns and flower beds for new growth and colorful blooms. And throughout the winter, Storybook Land’s animal residents and feathered visitors are kept warm, healthy, and well cared for.
It’s a lot to accomplish in just a few short months, but the incredible year-round staff always rises to the challenge—making sure everything is ready for Opening Day, which is March 28, 2026, this year.
