Emergency Plumbing: What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives and Simple Steps to Minimize Damage While You Wait

Plumbing emergencies can strike at the worst times—burst pipes, overflowing toilets, major leaks—you name it. When water starts flowing where it shouldn’t, it’s easy to panic. But knowing what to do in those first few minutes can make a huge difference in protecting your home or business and minimizing costly damage.

At TCS Jetting & Plumbing, we respond to emergency calls all the time, and we always say: your actions before we arrive matter. Here’s a quick guide to help you stay calm, take control, and reduce the mess while you wait for professional help.

1. Shut Off the Water

The first step in any plumbing emergency is to stop the flow of water. Locate the nearest shut-off valve—whether it’s under the sink, behind the toilet, or your main water shut-off for the entire building—and turn it clockwise to stop the water supply. If you’re not sure where your main shut-off is, now’s a good time to find it (before the next emergency).

2. Turn Off Electrical Sources if Needed

If water is near any electrical outlets, appliances, or the fuse box, turn off the power to that area of your home or business. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix, and it’s better to play it safe until a professional can assess the situation.

3. Contain the Water

Use towels, buckets, or anything absorbent to contain or soak up excess water. Placing a bucket under a leak or redirecting water away from sensitive areas like flooring or furniture can prevent damage from spreading.

4. Open Drains and Faucets

Even if you’ve shut off the main water supply, some water may still be trapped in the system. Open up nearby faucets or floor drains to help relieve pressure and encourage any remaining water to flow out safely.

5. Document the Damage

Take quick photos or videos of the situation, especially if you think you’ll need to file an insurance claim. This won’t slow you down and could be helpful later when explaining what happened to your provider—or to your plumber.

6. Call TCS Jetting & Plumbing Immediately

Once you’ve done the basics to contain the situation, call the pros. The sooner we’re on-site, the sooner we can diagnose the issue and get to work fixing it. Be ready to describe the problem, what you’ve already done, and whether you’ve turned off the water.

Why Quick Action Matters

Delaying a response—even by a few hours—can lead to warped wood, ruined drywall, mold growth, and even foundation issues. Emergency plumbing might be stressful, but a fast and informed response can dramatically reduce the damage.
