MYTH BUSTERS: TikTok vs Reality

Today’s world is full of misinformation. Often it is difficult to determine what is real and what is fake. When it comes to braces, there is a big difference between what you see on TikTok and the real experience of orthodontic treatment. Let’s break it down:

TikTok Says

  • Fast, easy, cheap
  • DIY methods work
  • No discomfort
  • One-size-fits-all

Reality

  • Slow, detailed, specialized
  • Dangerous and unverified
  • Expect some soreness
  • Every mouth is unique

TikTok’s Portrayal: Quick transformations, trendy hacks and DIY Braces, pain-free, miracles

Reality Check:

Moving teeth is a process. Most treatment takes months to years, not weeks.

“DIY” or shortcut methods can cause irreversible damage like gum loss and root resorption.

Patient compliance is key. Wearing elastics or aligners as prescribed, often 20-22 hrs/day, is needed for efficient results.

Orthodontic treatment is a dental procedure, not just a cosmetic one.

The true orthodontic process begins with a consultation, which includes a diagnosis and a treatment plan based on the doctor’s clinical examination and records gathered (extra- and intraoral photographs, radiographs, and study models). Next, appliances – braces, aligners, or other devices, depending on the case – are placed, and adjustments are made typically every 4-8 weeks. Once treatment is complete, the retention phase involves wearing retainers long-term to prevent relapse. Realistically, most comprehensive treatment often takes 18-36 months.

“No pain, no gain.” Because forces are required to align teeth, mild pain or pressure is normal after adjustments. This is similar to the soreness experienced after a work-out and tends to last 24-72 hours. A softer diet for the first couple of days after orthodontic appointments can help minimize discomfort.

Professional supervision by an orthodontist is key to the success of your treatment. Orthodontic treatment is not a recipe out of a cookbook. Every patient has individual issues and concerns, which creates an individualized treatment plan. The efficiency and outcome of treatment is heavily dependent on teamwork between the doctor and the patient. The patient is responsible for keeping their appointments, maintaining ideal oral hygiene, and wearing elastics as instructed.

Although it is important to do some fact-checking, not everything online is bad. TikTok does offer education and awareness, which helps build a community and normalize orthodontic treatment. The old adage, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” rings true. But so does, “Hard work pays off.” Knowing the reality about the orthodontic experience and putting in the work to achieve ideal results makes the final outcome that much sweeter. Keep smiling.
