What Is Neuropathy? A Hidden Problem Many People Don’t Notice
Have you ever felt tingling in your feet? Burning in your toes? Numbness in your hands? Many people brush these signs off as “just getting older.” But these can be early signs of a condition called Neuropathy.
Neuropathy means damage to the nerves. Nerves are like electrical wires in your body. They carry messages from your brain and spinal cord to your muscles, skin, and organs. When those nerves are damaged, the messages do not travel correctly. This can cause strange or painful symptoms.
The most common type is called peripheral neuropathy. It usually starts in the toes and moves upward. Some people feel tingling, like “pins and needles.” Others feel burning, stabbing, or electric shock-like sensations. Some people lose feeling completely and may not notice when they step on something sharp. That can lead to cuts, infections, and serious problems.
You might have neuropathy and not know it. Many people say:
“My feet just feel thick.”
“It feels like I’m walking on cotton balls or marshmallows .”
“My balance is getting worse.”
“My feet are cold (or hot) all the time.”
Loss of balance is a big warning sign. Your nerves help you know where your feet are without looking. When that signal is weak, falls become more common.
Neuropathy does not get better on its own. In fact, it only gets worse over time. The numbness can spread. The pain can increase. Weakness can develop. Daily tasks like walking, driving, or sleeping can become harder or impossible.
Most medical treatment focuses only on covering up the symptoms. Doctors often prescribe medications to dull the pain. These drugs may reduce discomfort, but they do not repair the damaged nerves. There is currently no good medical treatment that reverses neuropathy. That is why many people feel stuck. They are told to “manage it” and hope it does not progress too quickly.
But there is hope.
At The Livingston Clinic, we focus on improving nerve & vascular health instead of just masking symptoms. We begin with a detailed neurovascular exam. We also use advanced thermographic imaging to measure temperature patterns in the hands and feet. Changes in heat patterns can show areas of poor circulation and nerve stress. This gives us more information about what is really happening beneath the surface.
From there, we create a specific treatment plan designed just for you. No two patients are the same, and your care should not be either.
If you have tingling, numbness, burning, or balance problems, do not ignore it. The earlier neuropathy is addressed, the better the chances of improvement.
We have helped many, many people reduce their neuropathy symptoms and regain comfort, stability, and confidence.
You do not have to simply “live with it.” There may be options that can actually help.
