Your Movement Matrix Optimal Healing
Gravity
There’s 15 pounds per square inch of gravitational force pressing down on you at all times. Staying balanced is essentially a daily high-wire act to orchestrate life on this big, blue marble. And since we’re bipedal animals (two mere legs), we must master and maintain balance for best efficiency and to avoid dysfunction.
Your Inner Scaffolding
Famed architect Buckminster Fuller ordained the word “Tensegrity” (classic example being a geodesic dome …akin to Epcot’s landmark sphere). Essentially much of your body’s elements are “suspended in place” amidst a connective tissue matrix (Biotensegrity).
Fascia is that network of connective tissue with no beginning or end and surrounds virtually everything in your body; muscles, organs, skeleton and cells. Think of it as fluid scaffolding – a spiderweb-like intelligent matrix comprised of saline solution and hyaluronic acid (lubricant). Fascia influences 1/3 of your biomechanics, has 6x more pain receptors than muscle and remains crucial to your sensory, energetic being.
To propel this movement matrix, Isaac Newton’s axiom / Lawn of Inertia illustrates that a body in motion stays in motion. Muscles add this movement via contractile piston-like fibers for balancing and progressing through gravity.
Symmetry (body balance)
Distorting your balance a mere 2 inches left or right / front or back ….or rotate 2 degrees off center ….and the whole system will endure strain and pain from compensation. Shift its misalignment further and you’ll key-up your nervous / pain system as vital organs, nerves and blood supplies risk impingement. The impacts can be primal and profound; for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In my 20 year clinical practice, the forensic search for root cause misalignments is key. Back, Neck, Leg, Arm and Pelvic pain can emanate from something as simple as a childhood playground fall to more complex in an accident or other primal traumas.
All the while, the brain acts as an Air Traffic Controller; keeping track of the body’s space in gravity and nerve-proprioception-pain feedback throughout. Ultimately, the brain doesn’t ask for much; feed it with life-sustaining blood flow (oxygen and nutrients) …and it will remain alert and attempt to keep you out of pain, danger and balanced to protect this divine vessel for your soul.
Your Balancing Act – How to help your Body (and Mind)
Home Ergonomics
Sleep: A case could be made for various sleep positions: Back, Left Side or Right side. However these rules are without exception: Sleep with the same alignment of how you stand. eg Your knees in the same alignment / ears in line with your shoulders / nose in line with your sternum.
Work and Home Office Ergonomics
- Keep your monitor at eye height.
- Sit with your forearms higher than your keyboard (ideally your keyboard is within a pull-out drawer – below the desk height)
- Average your turns: Be attentive to how many head turns you command on a daily basis ( left and right between monitors or between desk paperwork). Shift paperwork or monitors to ensure your left and right head turns add up to 50/50 by day’s end.
Your New Disciplines:
- Physical Medicine – These fitness options keep you in symmetry (bilaterally balanced): Pilates, Rebounding, Walking, Elliptical, Rowing, Swimming
- Mind-Body Connectivity – These therapeutic disciplines help bolster mind and body connection: Yoga, QiGong, Tai Chi
