After the Storm: What Homeowners Should Know Before Scheduling a Roof Inspection

Back to Articles

If you were around last month, chances are you felt that recent hailstorm in a big way. With hail reported as large as baseballs, even approaching grapefruit size in some areas, many homeowners are now wondering what kind of damage may be sitting on their roofs.

But along with the storm has come something else: an influx of roofing companies going door to door, offering free inspections and quick repairs.

While that might sound helpful, it’s important to take a step back.

After major weather events, out-of-state contractors – often referred to as “storm chasers” – frequently move into areas like ours looking for fast business. Some may be legitimate, but others rely on high-pressure tactics, unclear contracts, or promises that don’t hold up once work begins.

One of the biggest red flags is urgency. If someone is pushing you to sign paperwork immediately or telling you they can “handle your insurance” without even inspecting your roof, that’s a sign to slow down. A trustworthy contractor will give you time to ask questions, review options, and make a confident decision.

This is where choosing a local company really matters.

Local contractors are part of the Liberty and Kearney communities. They have relationships here, reputations to uphold, and a vested interest in doing the job right. Just as importantly, they’ll still be here months, or years, down the line if you need follow-up support.

It’s also worth doing a little homework before moving forward. Make sure any company you consider is properly insured, has a physical presence in the area, and can provide references from local homeowners. A quick check can save a lot of stress later.

And remember: not all hail damage is obvious from the ground. Even if your roof looks fine, a professional inspection can help identify issues early before they turn into larger (and more expensive) problems.

At Over the Top Restoration, we’ve worked with homeowners across Liberty and Kearney through storms like this for years. Our goal is simple: to provide honest guidance, quality work, and a level of care that reflects the community we’re proud to be part of.

Because after a storm, peace of mind should come standard.
