Growing with Smart Pots
Smart pots, also known as grow bags, are a great choice for growing vegetables, herbs and flowers and offer many advantages over plastic or ceramic pots. Not only are they cost effective and long lasting, but they improve root health, provide excellent drainage, are lightweight and portable and provide temperature regulation. Smart pots can also be ideal for small spaces and properties that don’t have room for large garden beds.
One of the biggest benefits of using smart pots is improved root health. The porous fabric of grow bags allows air to reach the roots which promotes air pruning. When roots reach the edge of a bag, they stop growing in that direction and branch out instead. This makes a dense, healthy root system rather than circling roots that cannot uptake water and nutrients in plastic or ceramic containers.
Smart pots also provide excellent drainage. The breathable material allows excess water to escape easily and reduces the risk of root rot and overwatering. Keep in mind that you may need to water more in the summer when using grow bags, but you will have happier plants, as most plants do not like to have “wet feet.” They like to be watered deeply and then dry out before getting another dose of water.
Plastic containers get very hot in the summer when exposed to direct sunlight all day. The temperature inside the pot can easily exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit on the hot side of the pot. That means there is airflow through the container walls and your potting mix. This results in temperature regulation and cooler temperatures that don’t damage your roots.

And the plant becomes fuller, with more branching, buds, and fruit. A smart pot, filled with a healthy soil mix, is often a better place to grow than in the ground.
