WATER- A clean and reliable water source is one of the best ways we can help and attract birds of all kinds at any time of the year, especially during a drought!
Some birds drink up to 40% of their body weight to survive a hot spring or summer day. Water is important for helping birds to maintain their feathers and regulate body temperature. Enjoy the show as birds splash and play in a bird bath or watch them stop by for a quick drink!
FOOD- Spring has sprung and it’s time to talk about nesting nutrition…
During the spring and summer months when birds are nesting, mama birds can use all the energy they can muster! Providing a variety of seeds, suets, nuts and mealworms for the birds can provide them with the protein and calcium that they need as they build a nest, lay eggs, raise their young and go through their post-nesting molt!
We can’t forget about hummingbirds! They are BACK and we are all so happy…
Don’t forget the rules we can all follow to keep hummingbirds happy and healthy when offering them homemade nectar: 1 Part Plain White Table Sugar (Not organic sugar or any sugar substitutes) to 4 Parts Filtered Water + No Red Dyes! When the temperatures get hot, nectar must be changed out every day or every other day.
SHELTER- Did you know that some birds nest in cavities but can’t make them on their own? Providing a safe place for birds to have their young is key to creating a bird-friendly habitat. We carry a variety of bird houses, each specially designed with the dimensions and features that appeal to specific bird species, including bluebirds, chickadees, wrens and screech owls.
There is nothing better or sweeter than offering your backyard to birds as a safe place to raise their family and call home for the spring and summer months!
Please be kind to birds that nest on our porches during this time of year… Barn swallows can make a mess but they offer such great benefits to our yards such as insect control! Their nesting periods are quick and we thank you for hosting them.
Last but not least… LIGHTS OUT! Please turn off all non-essential outdoor lights from 11pm-6am so birds can navigate the Texas night sky safely when migrating overnight this spring!
Thank you for helping to make Dripping Springs the best place for birds to call home.
