What colors are the most popular right now?
After about 15 years of gray tones, neutrals, khakis, and greens/blues are the current trend in colors. While grays are still a very safe choice, as they blend easily with most decor, I’m finding clients shifting away toward more earthy tones, along with splashes of color.
What’s color drenching?
It’s a process of painting your walls, trim and ceilings in similar dark hues – like navy, forest green, and charcoals, for example. It’s great for making a statement, coziness, or making small spaces feel larger by eliminating visual breaks.
Are people still doing accent walls?
Definitely! It certainly breaks up large spaces and rooms, and can create a complementary focal point. Be it paint, wood, or wallcovering, an accent wall provides an opportunity to display your own design creativity.
I’m thinking of painting my bath vanity instead of replacing it. Is it easy to do?
Sure! Why replace a sturdy, oftentimes solid wood cabinet when you can update it with a totally fresh look? The key is to properly prime it with a bonding primer, so that your paint coats will adhere to the existing stain/polyurethane finish. A couple coats of a high quality trim enamel will protect it and provide a durable finish for years to come. It’s also a great opportunity to update the hardware during the process.
All the trim in my house is white. I’d like to break it up by doing the doors black. Do they need to be removed to paint?
No, not at all. Actually it’s easier to paint them as they’re hung, since both sides can be worked on at the same time. It’s important to mask the hinges first, and mask or remove the door knobs/handles. Some light sanding, followed by two coats of a high quality trim enamel does the trick, either in satin or semi-gloss.
