National Garden Month and Stress Awareness: A Natural Pair
April is both National Stress Awareness Month and National Garden Month. At first glance, they may seem unrelated. In reality, they highlight two sides of the same conversation—one drawing attention to the pressures many people experience in daily life, and the other pointing toward a simple, restorative antidote.
Stress has become a familiar part of modern routines. Busy schedules, constant connectivity, and competing responsibilities often leave little room for the slower rhythms that help the body and mind reset. Awareness is the first step in addressing this, which is why a month dedicated to recognizing the effects of stress can be valuable.
Gardening offers a natural counterbalance.
Working in the garden combines several elements known to support well-being. Time outdoors provides exposure to natural light, helping regulate circadian rhythm and daily energy patterns. Gentle physical activity—digging, planting, watering, or tending plants—keeps the body moving without the pressure of structured exercise. Gardening also focuses attention on a single, tangible task, offering a break from screens and the constant pace of modern life.
Research has shown that time spent in green spaces can reduce perceived stress and support a calmer mental state. Some studies have observed reductions in cortisol—the body’s primary stress hormone—after gardening activities. Scientists have also identified naturally occurring soil microbes, including Mycobacterium vaccae, that may influence mood and immune function through exposure to natural environments.
Of course, gardening does not have to mean large vegetable beds or elaborate landscaping. A few containers on a porch, herbs in a kitchen window, or flowers along a walkway can provide the same sense of seasonal connection.
National Stress Awareness Month reminds us to recognize the pressures that accumulate in everyday life. National Garden Month reminds us that sometimes the most effective response is also the simplest: stepping outside, working with the soil, and allowing nature’s slower rhythms to restore a sense of balance.
At Evergreen Compounding Pharmacy, we often talk about the importance of foundational wellness—supporting the body through steady habits, thoughtful care, and the rhythms that sustain long-term health. Sometimes those rhythms begin with something as simple as time in the garden.
