If you’ve spent any time in our studio lobby lately, you’ve heard the “summer scramble” in full effect. It usually sounds like one parent asking another: “Have you found a good camp yet?” What they’re actually asking is, “Please help me find something my child will love that isn’t just expensive babysitting.”
We’ve all been there. Summer usually goes one of two ways: either the kids curl up on the couch and forget what daylight looks like, or they head into August taller, braver, and full of stories. The difference isn’t how busy their summer is. It’s how intentional their summer experiences are.
Why Some Camps Click While Others Sink
The camps kids talk about all year long share a specific DNA. It’s not just about filling time; it’s about three things: real skills, real friendships, and the right kind of challenge.
In our dance and performing arts camps, we see this “click” happen when we move from passive learning to active creating. Here is how we make that happen:
- The nervous laughter phase: We don’t just teach kids choreography. We pair dancers with a new partner, give them a creative prompt, and set basic guardrails. Then we step back. Watching two kids move from shy, awkward silence to creating together is where real-world confidence is born.
- The breakthrough: In a world of tablets, the performing arts require kids to use their entire selves to communicate. When a child realizes they can captivate a room just by how they move or speak, they don’t need a screen to feel stimulated.
- Collaboration over competition: Unlike sports where there is a scoreboard, the arts focus on the ensemble. We teach kids that the show only succeeds if we all support each other. That creates a unique, safe bond that turns “camp friends” into real-life friends.
Finding the Right Fit
Not every child needs a stage. Some thrive in STEM; others live for the soccer field. But if your child has an active imagination, tons of energy, or even a shy streak that needs a gentle nudge, the performing arts are a game-changer.
You don’t need to optimize every second of their June and July. A few well-chosen, high-quality experiences do more for a child’s development than a packed calendar of mediocre ones.
Making Memories in the Neighborhood
We are so lucky to live in a community like the Kentlands, where world-class sports, arts, and enrichment are all within a five-minute drive. Whether you’re looking for a playful themed camp for a 4-10-year-old or a high-intensity, technical program for a more serious dancer, our goal at District Dance is the same. We want kids to leave feeling accomplished and capable, not just occupied.
When September rolls around, you don’t want to hear, “I was bored.” You want to hear, “Mom, watch this!” followed by a brand-new dance move in the kitchen.
Quick tips for finding the perfect summer experience:
- Look for progression: Does the camp build a skill week-to-week?
- Check the staff: Are they professional educators or just seasonal fillers?
- The “Shine” factor: Is there a showcase or performance? Kids need that “I did it!” moment to solidify their growth.
- The pickup test: Is your kid smiling, excited to tell you about their day, proud of something they did, and (hopefully) tired?
Summer spots fill quickly! If you’re still hunting for the perfect fit, I’d love to help you find a program that helps your child grow. You can see what we’re up to this summer at districtdanceco.com.
