What Should I Do Before Using My Pool This Spring?

If you’ve lived in Green Valley or Sahuarita for any length of time, you know how quickly pool season arrives. One day we’re enjoying cool desert mornings and the next day we’re staring at the pool thinking, “Its hot out, time to swim!”

Before you plan that first swim, spring is the perfect time to reset your pool properly.

Start with your equipment.

Empty the skimmer and pump baskets. Check the pump lid O-ring for cracks and look for drips or mineral buildup around the equipment pad. When you turn the system on, listen closely. If it sounds louder than normal, that’s often an early warning sign.

Brush before you balance.

Our desert dust settles everywhere, including your pool walls and steps. Even if the water looks clear, debris and spores may be clinging to surfaces. A thorough brushing allows your sanitizer to work more effectively once chemistry is adjusted.

Test more than just chlorine.

Chlorine is important, but it’s only part of the equation. In Southern Arizona, evaporation during winter can concentrate stabilizer (cyanuric acid) and minerals. When stabilizer levels climb too high, chlorine becomes less effective even if a test strip shows chlorine present. Checking pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer now can prevent bigger issues when temperatures hit the 90’s.

Check your filter pressure.

If the pressure gauge reads higher than your normal operating level, it may be time to clean or backwash. Good circulation early in the season helps prevent algae before it ever becomes visible. The most common mistake we see locally is waiting until the water turns cloudy in late spring. By then, the imbalance has often been building for months.

Think of spring as your pool’s annual checkup. A little attention now makes the entire swimming season smoother and more enjoyable.
