Your Spring Checklist for a Stress-Free Summer Move
Spring is the time of new beginnings and we are currently being welcomed by beautiful blossoming trees and warm, sunny days!
This is the perfect time of year to get the ball rolling for your upcoming Summer move. The more you can plan in advance, the less stress you will experience. Here are some of the things you can work on now:
Research Rental Homes in Your New Location – many people find that a rental home is a perfect first step, allowing them to move out of their current home to sell it more easily, and positioning themselves in temporary housing in their new location. This makes for easier house hunting, earlier school enrollment, and just getting used to new surroundings.
Decide on Your Moving Vendor – From full service to DIY, it’s time to research and find a moving company or plan for a rental truck or a portable storage container such as PODS or Pack Rat that can be delivered to your home and then transported to your destination when you request it. If you have always been a proud DIY-er, maybe consider how nice it would be to spring for a full service moving company this time! You should consider it an investment in your physical and mental health.
Organize Your House – Go through the house, the attic, the garage and the storage unit if you have one. What makes sense to keep for your new home? What do you want to get rid of? Remember that many movers charge by weight, so consider leaving heavy items behind and repurchasing them when you settle into your new home.
Order Supplies – Stock up on boxes, packing materials, tape, labels, permanent markers. You might be able to find freebies if your neighborhood has a “buy nothing” Facebook page or if you have friends who have moved recently.
Sell, Donate or Throw Out – Start selling and donating items now – it often takes longer than you might think! Also this is the perfect time of year for a weekend garage sale. I highly recommend asking friends and family for help during this stage! Sorting through a house and packing up can be a huge task. Team work is often needed!
Call Your Realtor – That’s me! I’ll help you put your plan together, share information about your home’s potential value, advise you on home improvements to get top dollar, introduce you to vendors, and discuss the right timing for putting your home on the market.
Plan to Transfer Services, Mailing Information, and Gather Documentation – Make a detailed list and start a binder and/or a digital file so that you don’t forget anything: start school registration, gather medical, dental, optical, and veterinary records, notify insurance and banking of your new address, plan for voter registration, transfer prescription medication refills, etc.
People often say that moving is one of the most stressful times in life, but with advanced planning and a positive, flexible mindset, much of that stress can be minimized. I’m here to share ways to help make your move go as smoothly as possible!
