Have you been struggling to get a good night’s sleep? Has it been affecting your energy throughout the day? Maybe you’ve been dealing with muscle cramps or fatigue?
I hear this every day at the pharmacy, and one of the first things I ask is whether they’re supplementing with magnesium.
It sounds simple, but this one mineral is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in your body; things like energy production, protein synthesis, and keeping your muscles and nerves functioning properly. When your levels are low, you feel it.
Here’s what magnesium actually does for you
I talk to people about magnesium a lot, and I want you to understand why I take it so seriously. It helps regulate your blood pressure and supports a normal heart rhythm, which matters more than most people realize. It can ease constipation and indigestion. It supports your muscles and nerves, so if you’re dealing with cramps, weakness, or that deep fatigue that won’t quit, this could be part of the picture. And yes, it really does help with sleep and anxiety – those are the two things I get asked about the most.
Not all magnesium supplements are created equal
As a pharmacist, I have researched and compared various magnesium forms and OTC brands. Ortho Molecular Products’ “Reacted Magnesium” stands out. While most magnesium supplements use only a single source of magnesium, which can easily overwhelm a single pathway of absorption and limit uptake of high-dose magnesium regimens, Reacted Magnesium provides three unique forms of highly absorbed magnesium (di-magnesium malate, magnesium citrate, and magnesium glycinate) to ensure maximum absorption, improved utilization, and gastrointestinal comfort.
I also hear a lot of complaints about other magnesium supplements causing gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation. The forms in Reacted Magnesium are specifically chosen to be gentle on your stomach while still doing the job.
One important reminder
Always tell your pharmacist if you’re picking up other prescriptions while taking supplemental magnesium, as it can potentially interfere with the absorption of certain drugs, including antibiotics like tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, as well as bisphosphonates. Proper counseling on timing your doses is essential to avoid reduced drug efficacy.
