Serving With Honor at Home and in the Heart of the Shoals

Back to Articles

There is a particular kind of man who gives himself to something greater without ever asking for recognition. Colonel Joe Medders is that kind of man.

At just sixteen years old, Joe Medders raised his hand and took an oath. He joined the National Guard. Over the years that followed, he rose steadily through the ranks and retired after more than 3 decades of service as a Colonel in the Army. His advancement was earned through hard work, integrity, and devotion to those around him. Ask the Colonel today about his service, and he’ll offer the same humble answer he always does: he’s not a hero — just an American patriot.

As Memorial Day draws near and we pause to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the uniform, it feels only right to tell the story of a local patriot — not on the battlefield, but in the quiet rooms of home, where another kind of courage is required.

Because life, even for the strongest among us, eventually asks something that no rank or title can prepare you for. For Colonel Medders, that something was the loss of his beloved wife, Linda.

Linda was the heart of their home. Her passing left a silence that no amount of discipline or resolve could overcome. Grief like that doesn’t follow orders. It settles in slowly, filling the spaces where a familiar voice used to be, where a hand used to reach across the table. For a man who had spent decades caring for others — for his country, his unit, his family — suddenly needing care himself was its own kind of uncharted territory.

That is where Cornerstone Caregiving had the profound privilege of stepping in.

He says the entire Cornerstone team has treated him like royalty — not because he asked to be, but because that is simply how we believe every person in our care deserves to feel. Especially those who have given so much of themselves in service to others.

It is a sacred thing to be trusted with someone’s most vulnerable season. We do not take that lightly.

At Cornerstone Caregiving, our mission is to help seniors remain in the comfort of their own homes — surrounded by their memories, their dignity, and the life they have built — while receiving compassionate, personalized care that genuinely makes a difference. Whether it’s daily
companionship, assistance with personal care, or simply being a steady, kind presence on a hard day, we show up because we believe people like Colonel Joe Medders deserve nothing less.

If you or someone you love could benefit from compassionate in-home care in the Florence, Muscle Shoals, or surrounding Shoals communities, we’d love to have a conversation. Visit us at cornerstonecaregiving.com/locations/florence-al or call (256) 554-9633 to schedule your free in-home assessment. Help is on the way.
