Tennis Elbow: You don’t have to play it to get it!

Back to Articles

What is it?

Tennis elbow is a condition that causes pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow. This discomfort can extend down the forearm and may lead to a feeling of weakness in your grip. It is often most noticeable when lifting objects—such as a cup or tumbler—with your palm facing down, especially when your arm is straight and reaching.

How does it develop?

Tennis elbow is commonly associated with repetitive overhand motions, but the exact cause isn’t always clear. In many cases, symptoms develop gradually over time rather than from a single injury.

How can it be treated?

At Premier Physical Therapy, treatment is tailored to your specific condition and may include:

  • Guidance on selecting and using the appropriate brace
  • Targeted exercises and stretching programs
  • Evidence-based manual therapy techniques
  • Therapeutic modalities such as heat and ultrasound to support healing
  • Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training to improve strength and recovery
  • Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, an advanced treatment option offered at our clinic, that other clinics can’t off, has shown excellent results for lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)

What is the recovery time?

Early and accurate diagnosis is essential, as other conditions can present with similar symptoms. Identifying the correct issue ensures a more effective treatment plan and can help shorten recovery time. Factors such as your age, overall health, and daily activities will also influence healing. Following prescribed exercises and learning how to avoid further strain are key to a successful recovery.
