Working out in a heated room has grown in popularity across fitness routines, from hot yoga to high- intensity interval training. While exercising in elevated temperatures is not new, the use of heated rooms have been offering a new sense of psychological benefits when practiced safely and listening to your body.
The primary benefit of the heat is increased flexibility. Heat naturally increases muscle temperature, which improves tissue elasticity and range of motion in movements. Warmer muscles are able to lengthen more efficiently, allowing students in classes to move deeper into stretches and holds. This can overall enhance your performance and can even reduce the risk of strain and injury compared to exercising in a cold room with tight muscles. For people engaging in practices such as hot yoga, the heat can make difficult moves seem even that much more easier to access for your bodies.
Another benefit is cardiovascular conditioning (heart health). When your body is exposed to heat, your heart works harder to regulate your internal temperature. Heart rates can rise in moderate exercise intensities but with the addition of heat it takes it one step further. Over time this can improve your heart health efficiency and endurance throughout life.
Working out in a heated room also promotes detoxification through sweating. While the body primarily detoxifies though the liver and kidneys, sweating is an easy way to help climate small amounts of toxins and can also promote skin health. Heavy sweating leaves our students feeling refreshed and cleansed and ready to take on the rest of their day. Calorie burn may also increase slightly in a heated environment because your body must use additional energy to keep your body cool. While heat alone does not contribute to extreme fat loss, combining the elevated temperature with consistent exercise makes for a healthy happier body long term.
A possibly overlooked benefit is the mental health aspect. The workouts are more challenging being in a heated room so this requires focus and resilience. Students tell us every day that they feel their mood has improved and their stress levels have reduced immediately after exiting the class and going on with their day. The sense of accomplishment is enough to bring yourself out of that funk and feel better about your mind, body and soul. The heat can create a mediative space and encourage you to slow down your breathing and tune into your body on your mats- bringing more body awareness.
