There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a kitchen remodel—new cabinetry, better flow, elevated finishes. But before the beautiful “after” comes the very real “during”—and if you’re living at home during construction, it can feel a little chaotic.
The good news? With the right preparation, you can stay organized, keep your routine mostly intact, and make the process much smoother.
Start Early: The 3-Week Packing Rule
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is waiting too long to pack. Start at least three weeks before demo day so you can work in stages instead of all at once. This gives you time to sort through what you actually use, reduce clutter, and set your new kitchen up for a fresh start.
Label boxes clearly and group items by function—like coffee supplies or baking tools—so they’re easier to find later. Taking photos of box contents before sealing them can also save time and frustration.
Set Up a Temporary Kitchen
If you’re staying in your home, a temporary kitchen is essential. Choose a space outside the construction zone—like a dining room, garage, or spare room—with access to water and good airflow.
Keep it simple with a folding table, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and a small fridge if possible. Don’t forget a snack station with grab-and-go items like fruit, protein bars, and drinks to make busy days easier.
Keep Essentials Within Reach
Pack a “kitchen survival kit” with everyday necessities you’ll need throughout the remodel. Include items like a slow cooker or air fryer, paper goods, basic utensils, cleaning supplies, and coffee essentials. Store everything in one clearly labeled bin so you’re not digging through boxes.
Simplify Your Cooking Routine
This isn’t the time for complicated meals. Prepare and freeze food ahead of time, rely on small appliances, and keep meals simple. Theme nights—like soup, tacos, or wraps—can make planning easier and reduce decision fatigue. And it’s perfectly fine to lean on takeout more than usual.
Plan for Dust and Disruption
Even with a great contractor, dust is part of the process. Protect nearby areas by sealing off rooms, covering furniture, and removing valuables. You may also want to change HVAC filters more often, use an air purifier, and open windows when possible to improve airflow.
Most importantly, give yourself some grace. Your home won’t feel perfect during this phase—and that’s okay.
Keep the End in Mind
A kitchen remodel takes patience, but it’s temporary—and when it’s done, you’ll have a space that’s more functional, more beautiful, and better suited to how you live every day.
At Toulmin Kitchen & Bath, we guide our clients through every phase of the process—from planning and design to construction and final installation—so you’re never navigating it alone.
