As the Oxford School District puts a bow on the 2025-26 school year, one thing is clear: “Excellence in Action” was far more than a motto. It was put to practice every single day.
The school year began with statewide and national recognition when the Oxford School District was featured in Business View Magazine as Mississippi’s “Best Managed” school district. The national spotlight celebrated the district’s commitment to innovation, student success, and strong leadership, setting the tone for an unforgettable year ahead.
In late July, staff returned energized by the district’s theme, “Excellence in Action.” That message quickly came to life in classrooms, athletics, career technical programs, and community partnerships across the city of Oxford.
One of the year’s proudest moments came when the United States Department of Education selected the Oxford School District to host U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. During her visit, district leaders, teachers, and students showcased what outstanding public education looks like in Mississippi, highlighting Oxford’s strong academic culture and student-centered learning environments on a national stage.
The first semester brought several historic achievements. The Oxford School District served the highest number of public school 3K students in Mississippi, with 98 students enrolled in early childhood education. The district also continued expanding career readiness opportunities, with more than 600 students selecting Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses and internships throughout the community.
Academic excellence continued at Oxford High School. Students achieved a record-setting milestone: 91 percent of students scored a “3” or higher on Advanced Placement exams, the highest percentage in district history.
Athletics and extracurricular activities thrived throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. OSD students earned multiple individual state championships, while records continued to fall across several programs. More than 65 percent of Oxford High School students participate in athletics, organizations, or clubs, helping strengthen leadership, school pride, and student connections.
During the spring semester, the Oxford School District recognized several new National Board Certified teachers, which reinforced the district’s commitment to exceptional educators. The district also hosted more than 40 local and state elected officials during its inaugural State of the Schools event, where leaders toured campuses and discussed future capital improvement priorities. At the same time, district leadership launched a district-wide capital improvement team to develop comprehensive 5- and 10-year facility plans.
This school year marked important milestones for students at both the beginning and end of their educational journeys. The district celebrated 236 Pre-K graduates, while 290 Oxford High School graduates crossed the stage ready for the workforce, military service, and colleges across the country.
As summer begins, the Oxford School District continues investing millions of dollars into capital improvements across the district. The new D.B. Sanders Playspace at Oxford Intermediate School is scheduled to open in late July, creating another exciting space for students while honoring the district’s history.
From national recognition to historic academic achievements and continued investments in students and facilities, the Oxford School District has truly had an extraordinary year.
With so much momentum heading into the future, one thing is certain: “Destination Excellence” is where we are headed.
