Feel Good About Every Drop: Is Your Cistern Ready for Summer?

Imagine stepping outside on a warm July morning, coffee in hand, garden waking up, the air already hinting at another beautiful Island day.

The grass is crisping around the edges. Gardens, guests, grandkids, pets, and outdoor projects are all asking for water. Many of us are thinking, how do we make the most of summer while still being thoughtful with water?

Here in Nanoose Bay, even surrounded by water, it is not something we take for granted. Whether you are on a well, connected to the local system, or thinking about adding a cistern, reliable water storage can bring relief.

A cistern is a simple idea with a lot of wisdom behind it. Rain falls on your roof, travels through gutters and downspouts, and is collected in a tank for later use.

But like most things around a home, a cistern works best when it is looked after.

Your tank does its work all winter, steadily storing precious water for the drier months ahead. Then summer arrives. The weather gets hotter, the tank sits full or partly full, and even with darker coloured tanks, warm conditions encourage organic buildup, biofilm, and microbial growth.

A clean cistern helps protect more than just your water quality, but also pumps, filters, plumbing, and peace of mind. It may be time for a cleaning if the water looks cloudy or smells off, filters are clogging, the pump seems to be working harder, you can see sediment, or you are preparing for heavier summer use.

Good cistern care includes cleaning the tank regularly, checking filtration and screens, securing lids, and reviewing when the tank should be disinfected.

Thinking about adding a cistern? The Regional District of Nanaimo currently has a Rainwater Harvesting Rebate Program for qualifying cisterns and related collection system expenses! Review the requirements and apply for pre-approval before purchasing or installing.

At Top of Ladder, we already help homeowners care for the hard-to-reach parts of their homes with roof demossing, gutter cleaning, window washing, pressure washing, and seasonal maintenance. That is why cistern service feels like such a natural fit for us.

Now, after being trained by Ken of Eco Fresh Cisterns, we are adding cistern cleaning as part of our line up of thoughtful home care services.

We clean cisterns from the top using specialized tools, which means we do not enter the tank. Our goal is to remove sediment and buildup, improve clarity, and help your water storage system stay reliable.
