As Americans gather this Fourth of July to celebrate the freedoms that define our nation, a remarkable community in Coker is helping create freedom of a different kind— the freedom for vulnerable children to grow up in safe, loving, and supportive homes.
Freedom Farm, Inc. has officially come full circle. What began as a vision given to Dr. Johnny Waits is now a thriving community that is transforming foster care in Alabama and offering hope to children and families across the state.
A Community Rooted in Hope
With the completion of Freedom Farm’s first neighborhood, foster children now have a place to heal, grow, and thrive. Thanks to a generous and meaningful donation, this special community has been affectionately named “The Shelley and Tom Jones Neighborhood”.
Highlights include:
◦ The Chapel – The first building established at Freedom Farm, Freedom Chapel is a symbol of the vision that inspired it from the beginning. Representing God’s love and the promise of a safe place for restoration, healing, and hope, the Chapel serves as a gathering place for prayer, reflection, and encouragement. Each morning, its chimes ring out beloved hymns across the farm as children head off to school, and each evening they sound again as families settle in for the night. Their familiar melodies serve as a comforting reminder that Freedom Farm is a place of faith, peace, and belonging.
◦ Four Homes, Four Families – Dedicated foster families providing stable, loving homes for children.
◦ Playground and Walking Trail – A children’s playground generously donated by the Kiwanis Club of Tuscaloosa and the peaceful Oaks Walking Trail, offering places for recreation, reflection, and connection.
◦ A Working Barnyard – Horses, chickens, and guinea fowl bring the therapeutic benefits of farm life to children every day.
Freedom Farm represents an innovative foster care model-a community built on compassion, support, and shared responsibility.
At the heart of the farm’s mission are three essentials for every child: an anchor, a compass, and a cross. The anchor represents stability and security. The compass provides guidance and direction. The cross serves as a reminder of faith, hope, and love.
These values are reflected in the three steel sculptures that greet visitors at the gated entrance, generously donated by the Saban Family and Nick’s Kids Foundation.
Standing Together for Children
Just as our nation’s freedom was built through sacrifice and service, Freedom Farm thrives through the support of a caring community.
Last month, members of the Alabama Crimson Tide Offensive and Defensive Lines volunteered on campus, helping with renovations and beautification projects. Their hard work ensured that Freedom Farm remains a welcoming and beautiful place where children can heal and grow.
This spirit of service reflects the commitment needed to address the challenges facing
the foster care system. The film Sound of Hope-the story of Possum Trot, now streaming on Paramount+-highlights the power of communities working together to care tor vulnerable children. Freedom Farm is bringing that same vision to Alabama.
Bishop W.C. Martin’s inspiring story is featured in the film ” The Sound of Hope…the story of Possum Trot.” Bishop Martin will be our guest at Freedom Farm in November when state and local governments and friends of DHR gather to “celebrate foster care,” He plans to emphasize the importance of how community organizations, foundations, churches, and individuals must work together to protect and support children in need. We are excited to welcome Bishop Martin and his wife, First Lady, Donna.
The Power of Monthly Giving
Freedom Farm’s long-term vision is to build 16 to 18 homes and serve up to 100 children.
Achieving that goal depends on the faithful support of monthly donors. Recurring gifts help provide safe homes, nurturing families, medical and therapeutic care, educational opportunities, recreational activities, and a strong support network for foster children and their caregivers.
Every monthly contribution helps create a future filled with hope, stability, and opportunity. Together, these gifts make it possible to expand Freedom Farm’s impact and provide more children with the security and freedom they deserve.
