Hello everyone! My name is Brett, the owner of Brett Baker Electric Inc. I have lived in the Long Sault area for almost 10 years. I am enjoying my time as a business owner getting to know many local residents and other business owners, whether through work, community outreach or providing my knowledge and expertise.
As we are entering the summer months, I’d like to take the time to answer some commonly-asked questions when it comes to renovating your home or purchasing a new home.
When should I hire a licensed electrician?
Whenever any electrical work is being done in your home or on your property, a licensed and credited company should be hired. This work includes changing receptacles and switches, installing pot lights or light fixtures, and any work at the panel just to name a few.
Is aluminum wiring dangerous in a house?
Although the wiring itself is not dangerous, the problem lies at the connection points of the wire, such as receptacles, switches and light fixtures. This is due to the physical properties of aluminum when it is exposed to air and or other metals. It can result in a potentially serious fire hazard. Many insurance providers now recommend, or in some cases require, a full inspection and proof of remediation prior to coverage being granted.
Do I need to get an electrical inspection?
Whether you are renovating, buying a new home, or buying an older home, you should always have an electrical inspection done. In Ontario, most electrical renovations require an inspection be completed to ensure the work has met Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) standards. When it comes to buying a home, be it new or old, it is always a good idea to have an inspection done as well. This can bring to light any defects from previous work, any required electrical upgrades, and potentially save the buyer from unknowingly purchasing a home that comes with extra expenses right away.
I hope this has helped anyone wondering about these frequently-asked questions and I look forward to connecting more with the community in the future. If you have any other inquiries or would like a quote for a project please don’t hesitate to call or email.
