If you’ve lived in Whitefish for any length of time, chances are you’ve experienced what makes this town so special. It’s the familiar faces, the local businesses that become part of your family’s story, and the people who leave a lasting mark on our community.
For my family, one of those places was Howie’s Shop.
Growing up, whenever something needed fixing, that’s where we went. From getting the snowplow ready for another Montana winter to replacing the brakes on my old ‘98 Ford Explorer, there never seemed to be a job Howie couldn’t handle. More than a mechanic, he was someone you trusted—a familiar face who always took care of his neighbors.
When Howie passed away, our family felt that loss, just as so many others throughout the Flathead Valley did. His shop stood as a reminder of a time when relationships mattered just as much as the work being done.
So when Big Mountain CrossFit found ourselves searching for a new home, we couldn’t help but feel drawn to that same building. After sitting on the market for some time, it seemed ready for a new chapter, and we knew we wanted to be part of writing it.
Today, Big Mountain CrossFit is proud to call the former Howie’s Shop home.
While the tools inside have changed—from wrenches to barbells—the purpose remains remarkably similar. This building has always been a place where people came looking for something better. Years ago, it was reliable repairs that kept families moving. Today, it’s a place where people come to improve their health, build confidence, challenge themselves, and find a community that supports them every step of the way.
As we’ve renovated the space, we’ve done so with a deep appreciation for the history held within these walls. We hope to honor that legacy by creating a place where friendships are built, goals are achieved, and lives are changed—just as Howie impacted this community in his own way for so many years.
Whether you’ve been a member of Big Mountain CrossFit for years or have never stepped inside a CrossFit gym, we’d love to welcome you into our new home. We hope you’ll stop by, take a look around, and be part of the next chapter of this building’s story.
