Bookkeeping Tip: Preparing for Year-End Starts Now

When most business owners think about year-end bookkeeping, they picture November or December—maybe even January when tax season is staring them in the face. But here’s a little secret: the easiest year-end closings happen because of the work you do now, not at the end of the year.

Mid-year is the perfect time to give your books a quick checkup.

Start by making sure your bookkeeping is current. Are your bank and credit card accounts reconciled? Have all your customer payments been recorded? Are your expenses being categorized correctly? Taking care of these items now helps prevent small issues from turning into big headaches later.

Next, take a few minutes to review your financial reports. Your Profit & Loss statement tells you how your business is performing, while your Balance Sheet provides a snapshot of what your business owns and owes. These reports aren’t just for your accountant. They’re tools that help you make better business decisions all year long.

If you have employees or work with independent contractors, now is also a great time to make sure payroll records, employee information, and contractor paperwork are complete and up to date. Waiting until the end of the year to track down missing information is never anyone’s idea of fun!

Finally, stay organized. Save receipts, keep track of business mileage, and maintain records for equipment purchases and other major expenses. A few minutes of organization each month can save hours of frustration later.

I’ve found that the business owners who enjoy the smoothest year-end (and the least stressful tax season) are the ones who treat bookkeeping as an ongoing part of running their business rather than something to tackle once a year.

Your future self will thank you for taking a little time now. Small, consistent steps today can help you finish the year with confidence and start the next one on the right foot.
