August is one of the best months in Montana. It’s when summer finally settles in. The lakes have warmed up, gardens are thriving, and most of us are squeezing every bit we can out of these long days.
It’s also the time of year when our routines begin to change. It happens almost without us noticing. While we are still enjoying the best part of a Montana summer, many of the choices that influence how we feel through the fall are already being made.
The shift is predictable – school starts, schedules fill up, and we are naturally spending more time indoors and around other people. Every year, around this time, conversations in the pharmacy begin turning toward immune support and staying well through the months ahead.
I often encourage patients to think less about “boosting” the immune system and more about building resilience. Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Resilience is the body’s ability to adapt and respond to the everyday challenges it encounters. That foundation is influenced by the habits we practice long before we need them. If you’ve been reading these articles over the past several months, you’ve probably noticed a common theme. Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, and adequate protein continue to come up because they influence how well the body functions over time. When those habits are consistently supported, the immune system is better equipped to do what it was designed to do.
August is a practical time to take inventory. Are healthy routines still in place after a busy summer? Are you getting enough quality sleep? Has nutrition taken a back seat to travel and summer activities? Do your daily supplements still match the season you’re heading into?
For some individuals, additional nutritional support may also be appropriate. Vitamin D, zinc, probiotics, medicinal mushrooms, and other immune-supportive supplements are commonly recommended based on individual needs and provider guidance. As always, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach.
When November arrives, many people find themselves trying to catch up after becoming run down. August offers an opportunity to do something different – prepare instead of react.
At Evergreen Compounding Pharmacy, we keep coming back to the same foundational principles because they continue to support long-term health. Whether we are talking about sleep, stress, movement, nutrition, or immune health, the message is the same. The body responds best when it is supported consistently, not just when something feels wrong. Building resilience isn’t about one supplement or one decision. It is built through consistent choices made over time.
