In our last issue, we introduced you to the remarkable community of Freedom Farm, Inc. in Coker—a sanctuary built on compassion, support, and shared responsibility to heal children navigating the foster care crisis. While communities like Freedom Farm stand as a powerful answer to a critical need, their mission naturally invites us to reflect on our own homes: How can we, as parents, guardians, and mentors, build stronger foundations today? How do we close the gap and protect the interior lives of our youth so they can grow up with stability, love, and opportunity?

The formation of a child determines their future success. If we want our children to confidently navigate the complexities of society, we can look to the three profound promises that greet visitors at the gated entrance of Freedom Farm. By intentionally embedding the values of the anchor, the compass, and the cross into our daily parenting, we can raise a generation built to thrive.

As we look at these physical symbols at our entrance, we want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Matt and Joseph Freeman and their incredible team at Good Works. Thank you for your exceptional craftsmanship and dedication in building our icon structures! These landmarks stand as beautiful, tangible reminders of the promises we make to every child who walks onto the farm.

Drop the Anchor: Cultivating Stability and Security

The foundation of a child’s early life shapes everything. Before children can boldly spread their wings and discover their “freedom to soar,” they must first experience absolute stability. In a world full of academic, social, and digital pressures, the home must serve as a safe harbor from uncertainty and instability.

  • The Daily Practice: Prioritize emotional predictability and presence. Establish consistent family rhythms—like shared meals, intentional check-ins, or dedicated quality time—that remain unbroken no matter how chaotic the outside week becomes. This steady environment creates deep emotional roots, giving children the underlying security they need to feel safe.

Calibrate the Compass: Guiding Wise Decisions

The most powerful thing in the world is a decision. As our youth mature into citizens of society, our ultimate goal is not to micro-manage their choices, but to calibrate their internal compass so that it naturally points toward honesty, integrity, and character.

  • The Daily Practice: Shift from simply enforcing rules to teaching core principles. When addressing behavior, engage your child’s critical thinking by asking guiding questions: “How does this choice reflect the person you want to become?” or “How does this decision impact others around you?” By helping them understand the why behind wise decisions, you ensure their interior focus stays aligned with “True North,” even when you aren’t there to guide them.

Honor the Cross: Nurturing Faith, Hope, and Love

True resilience is born out of hope—the absolute confidence that no matter what hardships or failures today may bring, there is always the promise of a better tomorrow. Guarding a child’s interior life means anchoring their identity in something much deeper than temporary successes, sports achievements, or social expectations.

  • The Daily Practice: Model an environment rooted in faith, forgiveness, and unconditional welcome. Let your children see a culture of grace at home where mistakes are met with restoration rather than condemnation. When children are raised with strong faith principles as their standard, they develop the confidence to face the world with peace and a sense of belonging.

Creating a Lifelong Legacy

Building a healthy, resilient generation is a collective journey. Just as it takes an entire community—from local churches and foundations to caring neighbors—to sustain the vision of Freedom Farm, it takes intentional, daily dedication to cultivate strong families. When we give our children an Anchor for security, a Compass for guidance, and a Cross for hope, we aren’t just protecting their individual futures; we are transforming the trajectory of our entire community.
