Compared to PVB, SGP is:

  • Significantly stronger and far more rigid
  • Better at resisting wind and impact loads
  • More durable in exterior environments

Most importantly, if breakage occurs, SGP helps the glass maintain its shape and continue functioning as a barrier—an important factor for elevated decks and open exposures common in BC.

Choosing the Right System

The railing design plays a major role in material selection:

  • Framed systems (with posts and top rails) can often use PVB, as the structure provides additional support.
  • Frameless systems (with minimal hardware and no top rail) rely on the glass itself for strength—making SGP the preferred and, often expected choice. In exposed or higher-elevation applications, SGP provides added confidence in both performance and safety.
