One of the most common moving scams involves a company providing an unusually low estimate to secure the job, only to significantly increase the price after belongings have been loaded onto the truck. In some cases, fraudulent movers refuse to deliver possessions until additional fees are paid, a tactic known as a “hostage load” scam. Other scammers collect large deposits and never show up on moving day, or falsely claim to be licensed and insured, leaving consumers with little protection if belongings are damaged, lost or stolen.
Senior citizens are often targeted because moves frequently occur during major life transitions that can create emotional stress and a sense of urgency. Scammers may take advantage of these circumstances by using high-pressure tactics, demanding quick decisions or offering deals that seem too good to be true.
Additional warning signs include requests for large upfront deposits, cash-only payments, a lack of written estimates or contracts, unmarked moving trucks and companies that are unwilling or unable to provide licensing information. Fraudulent movers may also add unexpected charges for stairs, elevators, packing materials, fuel or storage after the move is already underway, leaving customers feeling they have no choice but to pay.
The best defense against moving scams is preparation and research. We highly recommend that individuals visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website under the “Protect Your Move” program to validate whether your moving company is properly licensed and insured. This program also provides consumer protection resources to help educate families on how to avoid moving scams as well as recognizing what warning signs to avoid when selecting a moving company.
