As summer winds down, it is the perfect time to prepare your home and landscape for the changing seasons. A little maintenance in late summer and early fall can help protect your property from winter weather while setting your lawns and garden up for success next spring. Whether you’re caring for your yard or getting your home ready for colder temperatures, taking care of a few key projects now can save both time and money later.

Strengthen Your Lawn Before Winter

One of the best things homeowners can do this time of year is give their lawns the nutrients they need before winter arrives. Fall fertilizer helps strengthen root systems while grass is still actively growing, allowing it to store energy for the colder months ahead. It’s also an excellent opportunity to oversee thin areas and repair damage caused by summer heat and drought. Healthy roots established in the fall often result in a thicker, greener lawn when spring returns.

Check Your Garden Soil

As vegetable gardens begin to slow down, don’t overlook your soil. Testing your soil’s pH and nutrient levels now provides valuable information before next year’s planting season. Adding compost or other organic matter in the fall allows it to decompose over the winter, creating richer, healthier soil by spring. Then, cleaning out spent plants and removing weeds also helps reduce pests and diseases that can overwinter in your garden beds.

Prepare for Fall and Winter Storms

Late summer is also a good reminder that severe weather can happen at any time. Take a walk around your property and trim dead or large overhanging tree branches that could fall during strong winds or heavy snow. Secure outdoor furniture, inspect gutters for debris, and ensure downspouts direct water away from your home’s foundation. Having essentials such as flashlights, batteries, generators, and extension cords ready before a storm hits can make storm preparation much less stressful.

Improve Your Home’s Energy Efficiency

Before temperatures begin to drop, inspect your windows and doors for drafts or air leaks. Worn weatherstripping or cracked caulk can allow warm air to escape. This will make your heating system work twice as hard and raise your energy bill. Sealing these small gaps is a simple weekend project that can make the colder months more comfortable.Preparing for fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Tackling a few projects now helps protect your investment and makes the transition into winter much smoother.
