The companionship between people and pets is powerful at any age, but for older adults, it can be especially meaningful. Studies show that pet ownership can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, encourage physical activity, and even help slow cognitive decline. Beyond the physical and emotional benefits, caring for a pet provides something equally valuable—a renewed sense of purpose, routine, and connection.
At Waltonwood, those benefits are evident every day.

As a pet-friendly senior living community, Waltonwood has witnessed the remarkable bond between older adults and companion animals. Residents are encouraged to bring their beloved pets, creating a warm, welcoming environment where both people and their four-legged companions feel at home.
That belief inspired Waltonwood’s “Seniors Helping Seniors” initiative, part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign. The program shines a spotlight on senior shelter animals, who often remain in shelters nearly four times longer than younger pets, with only about 25% finding homes each year.
Waltonwood believes senior pets deserve the same opportunity as senior adults—to be valued for who they are rather than their age. To help remove barriers to adoption, Waltonwood Main and University have partnered with A Rejoyceful Rescue and are covering all adoption fees for shelter pets age seven and older, making it easier for everyone to welcome a loving companion into their lives.
The community is also inviting the public to support local shelter animals. Through August 16, Waltonwood Main and Waltonwood University are collecting donations of pet food, treats, toys, litter, blankets, and other supplies for A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue. Donations may be dropped off at either community.
The effort will culminate with a Wine Tasting Fundraiser benefiting A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue, co-hosted by Waltonwood Main and Waltonwood University. Guests will enjoy exceptional wine tastings, delicious hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and a special presentation by Michigan By The Bottle, with 100% of the $20 admission supporting animals in need.
Whether through adoption, volunteering, donating, or attending a community event, everyone has the opportunity to make a difference. For both seniors and senior pets, it’s proof that it’s never too late for a new beginning—and that sometimes the perfect companion is simply waiting for a second chance.
