By August, most of us have spent weeks enjoying everything summer has to offer — afternoons at the lake, long days by the pool, hours in the garden, evenings cheering from the sidelines at baseball games. It’s been a good season.
Our skin, on the other hand, has been working overtime.
Even with diligent sunscreen use, the combination of UV exposure, heat, humidity, chlorine, salt water, and air conditioning takes a real toll. In my years as an esthetician, late summer is when I see it most clearly in clients: skin that feels dehydrated or looks a little dull, a complexion that isn’t as bright as it was in June, fine lines that suddenly seem more noticeable simply because the skin beneath them is thirsty.
The reassuring part is that skin is remarkably resilient when it’s given the right care at the right time — and that time is now.
Late summer is the ideal window to restore hydration before we head into cooler, drier months. A professional facial does more than feel good; it removes the buildup of sunscreen, sweat, and environmental debris while replenishing moisture and supporting your skin’s natural barrier. Treatments designed for gentle exfoliation can reveal smoother, healthier skin underneath, without the harshness many people associate with resurfacing. I always tailor these treatments to what your skin needs in that moment, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
Of course, healthy skin doesn’t begin and end with a facial. Drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen daily, cleansing gently, and using products suited to your specific skin type all make a meaningful, measurable difference. In my experience, consistency almost always outperforms whatever trend is popular that month.
The same principle applies to the rest of your body. Summer can leave hands, feet, hair, and scalp showing the effects of months spent outdoors. A nourishing pedicure, a conditioning hair treatment, a relaxing massage, or a scalp treatment can help you transition into the new season feeling refreshed from head to toe.
As August settles in and routines return to normal, I’d encourage you to take an hour for yourself before life gets busy again. Self-care isn’t about chasing perfection or trying to look younger. It’s about giving your body the attention it deserves after a season spent taking care of everyone and everything else.
Your skin has been with you for every sunny memory made this year. A little extra care now is a
simple, meaningful way to thank it.
