The August Years

There is something special about August.

It stands quietly between two seasons. Summer has not yet ended, but hints of autumn are beginning to appear. The long days are still here, yet we can feel the rhythm changing. Children return to school. Football season approaches. Families begin settling back into routines.

August reminds us that life moves in seasons.

Many people speak of reaching the “August years” of life. It is not a phrase about growing old. It is a phrase about arriving at a season rich with experience, wisdom, and perspective. Just as a farmer looks across a field and sees the results of months of work, the August years allow us to look back on a lifetime of relationships, accomplishments, lessons, and memories.

These are often the years when stories become treasures.

Stories told around the dinner table.

Stories shared on front porches.

Stories that begin with, “Did I ever tell you about the time…”

These moments become the threads that connect generations.

In our fast-paced world, it is easy to assume there will always be more time for those conversations. More time to ask questions. More time to write down family history. More time to tell someone how much they mean to us.

But August teaches us something important.

The changing season reminds us to appreciate today.

To gather around the table.

To make the phone call.

To visit a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or lifelong friend.

To listen carefully when they share the stories that helped shape the family we know today.

At Norwood-Wyatt Chapel, we have the privilege of serving families during some of life’s most meaningful moments. What many people don’t realize is that our work often begins long before a service is ever needed.

It begins with conversations.

Conversations around kitchen tables.

Conversations in living rooms.

Conversations between generations who simply want to make sure their wishes are understood and their loved ones are cared for.

Trust is not built in a single day. It is built through relationships. It is built by listening. It is built by being present.

That is why our team believes in meeting families where they are, both literally and figuratively. Sometimes that means sitting at a family’s dining room table. Sometimes it means answering questions before they become concerns. Sometimes it simply means helping people understand their options so they can make decisions with confidence and peace of mind.

The truth is that planning ahead is not about focusing on an ending.

It is about caring for the people you love.

It is about lifting future burdens from the shoulders of your family. It is about ensuring your wishes are known.
Most importantly, it is about creating space for loved ones to focus on celebrating a life rather than navigating difficult decisions during a difficult time.

As August gently leads us toward autumn, perhaps it offers all of us a simple reminder.

Gather close.

Share the stories.

Preserve the memories.

Have the conversations that matter.

And cherish the people who make life meaningful.

After all, the greatest legacy any of us leave behind is not found in what we own, but in the lives we touch and the memories we create together.
