What Every Parent Should Consider When Choosing a Primary School

For many parents, choosing a primary school is the first major educational decision they’ll make for their child. It’s exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming. Every school has a website, a mission statement, and smiling photos of happy children. So how do you know which environment is truly the best fit?As a school principal, I’ve had the privilege of welcoming hundreds of young learners through our doors over the years. I’ve also had countless conversations with parents trying to determine what really matters. While every child is unique, there are a few important questions I encourage every family to ask when evaluating any primary school.

• Is my child truly safe here?

Safety goes far beyond secure entrances and emergency drills. Ask yourself whether the school creates an environment where children feel emotionally safe as well. Do teachers know their students personally? Are kindness, respect, and inclusion intentionally taught? Children thrive when they feel seen, heard, and valued.

• Will this school help my child grow—not simply advance?

The primary years are about much more than learning letters and numbers. They are a time when confidence, curiosity, independence, and resilience begin to flourish. Look for a school that nurtures the whole child academically, socially, emotionally, and, if it’s important to your family, spiritually. Growth should be evident not only in report cards but in your child’s enthusiasm for learning and willingness to embrace new challenges.

• Does the school’s structure support both children and families?

A predictable routine helps young children feel secure and successful. Ask about the daily schedule, class size, enrichment opportunities, transportation, before- and after-school care, and how the school communicates with parents. The right structure creates consistency for children while helping busy families manage the demands of everyday life.

• What values are being reinforced every day?

Every school teaches values, whether intentionally or not. Consider what qualities you hope your child will develop during these formative years. Are honesty, compassion, responsibility, respect, and service reflected in everyday interactions? More importantly, are those values modeled by teachers and administrators, or are they simply words displayed on a hallway wall?

• Do the teachers love what they do?

One of the most revealing things you can observe during a school visit is the interaction between teachers and students. Are the classrooms filled with energy, encouragement, and genuine engagement? Passionate educators inspire confidence, celebrate progress, and recognize that every child learns differently. That enthusiasm often becomes contagious.
