You’ve handed over your keys. The insurance claim has been started. Now what? For many drivers, the repair process is a bit of a mystery. You see your vehicle disappear into the shop, then several days—or sometimes weeks—later you get the call that it’s ready.
So what actually happens during that time?
The first step is a thorough inspection. While technicians can see obvious damage right away, many problems are hidden beneath body panels or behind the bumper. That’s why one of the first things a collision center does is carefully disassemble the damaged area to look for anything that couldn’t be seen during the initial estimate. Once every damaged part has been identified, a detailed repair plan is created. Sometimes additional damage is discovered after the vehicle is taken apart, which is one reason repair estimates or timelines may change.
Next comes the structural and body repair work. If the frame or vehicle structure has been affected, specialized measuring equipment is used to return everything to factory specifications. Damaged panels are then repaired or replaced, making sure gaps, alignment, and fit all match the way the vehicle was originally built. After that comes paint. Today’s computerized color-matching systems help technicians blend new paint with the existing finish so repairs are virtually impossible to detect. Finally, modern vehicles often require something many drivers have never heard of: recalibration.
Many cars now rely on cameras and sensors for features like lane-keeping assist, blind- spot monitoring, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. After certain repairs, those systems must be tested and recalibrated so they continue working as intended. Before any vehicle leaves Malibu Collision Repair Center, it receives a final quality inspection to verify that repairs have been completed properly, all safety systems are functioning correctly, and the vehicle is ready to return to the road.
A collision repair is about much more than making a vehicle look good again. It’s about restoring the safety, performance, and peace of mind that every driver deserves after an accident.
