What Is RAWgust?

August has become known by many dog enthusiasts as RAWgust, a month dedicated to learning about and celebrating the benefits of feeding dogs a raw food diet. As someone who has spent years working with dogs of all breeds, temperaments, and activity levels, I’ve seen firsthand how nutrition can impact everything from energy and coat condition to focus during training.

The Potential Benefits

A raw diet typically consists of uncooked muscle meat, organs, edible bones, and sometimes fresh fruits and vegetables. Many owners report benefits such as shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth, smaller stools, improved digestion, and sustained energy. For working dogs and highly active breeds, proper nutrition can also support muscle development and recovery.

It’s More Than Just Raw Meat

That said, feeding raw isn’t as simple as tossing your dog a piece of meat. It requires planning, research, and consistency. Dogs need a balanced diet with the proper ratio of protein, fat, bone, and organ meat. Feeding only chicken breasts or ground beef, for example, won’t provide complete nutrition over time. If you’re considering making the switch, I always recommend educating yourself first, or working with your veterinarian or a qualified canine nutrition professional, to ensure your dog’s nutritional needs are met.

Keeping Costs Under Control

One of the biggest concerns I hear is cost. While premium pre-made raw diets can be expensive, there are ways to make raw feeding more affordable. Buying in bulk, watching for sales, building relationships with local butchers, or purchasing from suppliers that specialize in raw pet foods can significantly reduce expenses. Meal prepping several weeks’ worth of food at once also saves both time and money.

Is It Right for Every Dog?

People often ask if raw feeding is best for certain breeds. In my experience, it can benefit dogs of virtually any breed when done correctly. Whether you own a Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Border Collie, or a mixed-breed companion, the key is tailoring portions and nutrition to your dog’s age, activity level, and overall health. Puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with certain medical conditions may require additional guidance before transitioning.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, a raw diet isn’t the right choice for every family. It takes commitment, freezer space, safe food handling, and careful planning. But for owners willing to invest the time, the results are well worth the effort.
