Last year, I shared a Medicare enrollment checklist to help seniors prepare for the Annual Enrollment Period. While some things in Medicare stay the same, one thing certainly does not: plans continue to change every year.
Premiums change. Prescription drug coverage changes. Provider networks change. Benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, transportation, and over-the-counter allowances can change as well. That’s why even if you reviewed your coverage last year, it’s just as important—if not more important—to review it again this year.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, but the best time to start preparing is right now. Taking a little time before enrollment begins can help you avoid last-minute stress and ensure your coverage still fits your health needs and budget.
- Review Your Current Medicare Coverage
Start by understanding exactly what coverage you have today.
Ask yourself:
- Am I enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medicare Supplement, or Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan?
- Have my healthcare needs changed over the past year?
- Am I satisfied with my current costs and benefits?
- Are my doctors and specialists still participating in my plan?
Even if your plan worked well this year, there’s no guarantee it will remain the best fit next year.
- Update Your Medication List
One of the biggest changes Medicare beneficiaries face each year involves prescription drug coverage. Take a few minutes to create an updated list that includes:
- All current prescription medications
- Dosages and frequency
- Preferred pharmacy
A medication review can help determine whether your current drug coverage remains cost-effective and whether another option could save you money throughout the year.
- Review Your Healthcare Budget
Medicare plans are about more than just premiums.
Consider:
- How much did you spend on copays and prescriptions this year?
- Have your medical expenses increased?
- Would additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, or fitness programs provide more value?
The lowest premium isn’t always the lowest overall cost. Looking at the complete picture can help you make a more informed decision.
- Watch for Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)
Most Medicare Advantage and Part D members will receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) in September.
This document outlines important changes to:
- Premiums
- Copays
- Deductibles
- Provider networks
- Drug formularies
- Supplemental benefits
Many people set this document aside without reviewing it. Don’t make that mistake. It often contains the most important information you’ll need before enrollment begins.
- Schedule a Medicare Review with a Licensed Agent
Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all. A personalized Medicare review can help determine whether your current plan still meets your needs or whether better options may be available.
During a review, we can:
- Verify your doctors and specialists
- Review your prescription medications
- Compare plan benefits and costs
- Discuss Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement options
- Answer your Medicare questions in plain English
My goal is simple: help you make an informed decision with confidence.
- Mark Your Calendar for October 15
The Annual Enrollment Period begins on October 15 and ends on December 7.
By preparing now, you’ll avoid the rush and have plenty of time to evaluate your options carefully rather than making a last-minute decision.
The Bottom Line
The checklist may look familiar from last year, but its importance continues to grow. Medicare plans evolve every year, and what worked well in 2026 may not be the best fit for 2027. A little preparation today can help you save money, avoid surprises, and make sure your coverage continues to support your health and lifestyle.
If you’d like help reviewing your Medicare options, I’m happy to help.
