When Someone Close to You Needs Help

When someone you care about needs help, your first instinct is often to pull out your phone and start searching online. While that’s a great way to find a restaurant or read product reviews, finding the right mental health or addiction support is much more complicated.

My name is Matt Bauersachs, and I own and operate Learn to Live Recovery and Learn to Live Clinical Services. I’ve worked in behavioral health, mental health, and addiction treatment for more than a decade, and one thing I’ve learned is this: finding the right support isn’t always as simple as doing an internet search.

Searching Online Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

For most things in life, Google works well. If you’re craving pizza, you search “best pizza near me,” read reviews, and usually end up with a great meal because real customers have shared their honest experiences. Mental health and addiction treatment are different. Today’s online search results are heavily influenced by SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and AIO (Artificial Intelligence Optimization). That means some of the first listings you see may be there because they’ve been paid for, not necessarily because they’ve earned the best reputation or are the best fit for your situation. While it’s smart to use online resources, it’s just as important to look beyond the first page of search results when making decisions about a loved one’s care.

The Right Fit Matters

I don’t believe there are “bad” programs or professionals. In fact, we need more quality providers than ever before. The challenge isn’t finding a good program – it’s finding the right program. Over the years, I’ve toured hundreds of treatment facilities across the country. Today, there are specialized programs and treatment approaches designed to meet a wide variety of needs. The key is matching the individual with the program that’s best equipped to help them succeed. When you’re making decisions about someone you love, it helps to talk with someone who has personally seen these programs and understands their strengths.

Every Situation Is Different

When someone reaches out to me for guidance, I always begin by gathering background information. What are the presenting concerns? Is substance use involved? Are they struggling with anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition? Have they experienced trauma or another difficult life event? Then we look at the practical side. Do they have insurance? Will they need private pay? What’s their budget? Can they travel if the best treatment option isn’t close to home? These questions help narrow the options and identify programs that are both appropriate and accessible.

More Resources Are Available Than You May Think

One common misconception is that quality care is only available to people with unlimited financial resources. Fortunately, that’s not the case. Many excellent programs accept insurance, offer private-pay options, or work with foundations and funding sources that help cover treatment costs. Exploring every available resource can make quality care possible for more families than they realize.

Trust Experience Over Marketing

At Learn to Live Recovery, our men’s program serves clients from across the country. People don’t find us because we have the biggest marketing budget, they find us because we’ve built trust with professionals, clients, and families over many years of providing quality care.

Programs like ours exist across the country, each serving different populations and needs. My role isn’t simply to recommend a program – I’m just a person here to help you find the right one.
