Your Desk Job Doesn’t Have to Be Sedentary

For many of us, a typical workday means hours spent behind a desk. And while your career may require you to sit, that doesn’t mean your body has to stay still all day.

Long periods of sitting can contribute to stiffness, back and neck discomfort, decreased mobility, and an overall feeling of fatigue. The good news? Staying active during your workday doesn’t require a workout—or even leaving the office.

Small, consistent moments of movement can make a meaningful difference.

Make movement part of your workday. Take the stairs, park a little farther away, walk while taking a phone call, or use ten minutes of your lunch break to get outside. Even getting up periodically to refill your water or speak with a coworker instead of sending an email gives your body a much-needed change of position.

Give your desk a reset. Every hour or so, take a few minutes to stand, stretch, roll your shoulders, or walk around. Your body was designed to move in a variety of ways—not remain in one position for eight hours.

Pay attention to the aches you’ve learned to ignore. That nagging neck tension or low back discomfort at the end of the day doesn’t have to become your normal. Sometimes simple changes to your workspace, posture, strength, or daily movement habits can make a significant difference.

At Wellness Solutions, our physical therapists look beyond simply treating where it hurts. We can assess how you move, identify areas of weakness or restriction, and help you build strategies that fit naturally into your workday. From ergonomic guidance to mobility, strengthening, and individualized exercise, the goal is to help your body feel as capable at 5 p.m. as it did when you started your morning.

You don’t need to completely change your routine to move more—you just need to create more opportunities to move within it.
