Fall may look a little different in Southern Arizona. While other parts of the country are pulling out snow shovels and winter coats, we are finally opening the windows, enjoying the patio and spending more time outside. But cooler temperatures also make fall the perfect time to give your home and your insurance coverage a seasonal checkup.
Think of it as a little preventative maintenance for your peace of mind.
Start outside. After a long, hot summer and a busy monsoon season, take a walk around your property. Look for loose roof tiles, damaged fencing, clogged gutters, and tree branches that may have been weakened by wind or storms. Check your outdoor lighting, especially as the days begin to get shorter. A well-lit walkway can help prevent trips and falls while making it easier for guests to safely find their way to your front door.
Fall is also a great time to check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed, and test each device to ensure it is working properly. As fireplaces, furnaces and other heating appliances begin to see more use, these simple devices can provide an important layer of protection.
If you have been away from your Arizona home during the summer, take some time to inspect the property when you return. Look for signs of water leaks, storm damage or other issues that may have developed during those heavy rains and hot days. Even a small problem can become a much larger headache if it goes unnoticed.
Once you have checked your home, it may be time to check your insurance policy as well.
Life changes, and your insurance coverage should keep up. Did you make improvements to your home? Purchase expensive jewelry, artwork or other valuable items? Add a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen or other feature to your property? These changes could affect the amount or type of coverage you need.
It is also a good idea to review your deductibles and understand exactly what your policy covers. Many homeowners do not think about their insurance until they need it, which is not the ideal time to discover that they have questions about coverage.
A little fall maintenance can help protect your home, your belongings, and the people you care about. And while reviewing your insurance may not be as enjoyable as sitting outside on a beautiful Arizona evening, knowing that your home and coverage are ready for whatever comes next can make those evenings a little more relaxing.
This fall, enjoy the cooler weather, welcome friends and family, and take a few simple steps toward a safer, more protected home.
