  • Copied!

Fall in Minnesota has a way of making us slow down and soak in all the beautiful fall colors that create the perfect backdrop for cozying up with a blanket and bowl of chili for the big game, or gathering around the fire pit in the cool, crisp air. And, of course, it’s the time of year when nearly everything comes in pumpkin spice!

October also brings one of the most playful holidays, with pumpkins on the porch, trick-or-treaters and plenty of creative costumes.

But along with everything we love about fall comes the reality that winter is right around the corner. Before the snow flies, October is the perfect time to prepare your home and property for winter.

Your Fall Home Checklist

  • Clean gutters and downspouts. Remove leaves and debris and ensure water drains away from your foundation.
  • Service your furnace. Schedule a tune-up before the heating season is in full swing.
  • Disconnect hoses and exterior water lines. Drain and turn off faucets and irrigation systems to help prevent frozen pipes.
  • Check windows and doors. Replace worn weatherstripping or caulk gaps to keep cold air out and warm air in.
  • Inspect your roof. Look for damaged or missing shingles and other areas that could allow moisture inside.
  • Prepare your fireplace and chimney. Have wood-burning fireplaces and chimneys inspected and cleaned before that first cozy fire.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries as needed and make sure detectors are working properly.
  • Prep outdoor spaces. Store or cover patio furniture, finish fall yard cleanup and make sure your snow removal equipment is ready.
  • Check your home’s exterior. Look for cracks, damaged siding or openings where moisture or unwanted little winter guests could find their way inside.

A little preparation on a beautiful October weekend can go a long way toward keeping your home safe, warm and comfortable all winter. Then you can get back to enjoying the best parts of fall…colorful leaves, football, fire pits and, yes, maybe one more pumpkin spice latte!
