Fall Is the Perfect Time to Give Your HVAC System a Break

After another long Southern Arizona summer, your HVAC system deserves a little time off.

For months, it has worked hard to keep your home comfortable through triple-digit temperatures, warm nights, and long stretches when the air conditioner seemed to run almost nonstop. While we may not get the dramatic fall weather changes seen in other parts of the country, autumn here brings something just as welcome: a chance to give your HVAC system a break.

Those beautiful fall mornings and evenings are the perfect opportunity to turn off the air conditioner, open the windows, and enjoy some fresh air. Even giving your system a few hours of rest can be a welcome change after a demanding summer season.

But fall is also a great time to pay attention to how your system performed during those hottest months.

Did your home stay comfortable? Were some rooms warmer than others? Did you notice higher energy bills, strange noises, or weaker airflow? Did your air conditioner seem to run longer than usual? These could all be signs that your system could benefit from some attention.

One of the easiest things homeowners can do is check and replace their air filter. During the summer, your HVAC system may have moved a tremendous amount of air through your home, and a dirty filter can restrict airflow, making the system work harder than necessary. A clean filter can help your system operate more efficiently and improve the air circulating throughout your home.

Fall is also an ideal time to schedule preventative maintenance. It is much easier to discover a small issue now than to find yourself dealing with a breakdown when you need your heating or cooling system the most. A professional inspection can identify worn parts, electrical concerns and other issues that may have developed during the busy summer season.

And while temperatures are still pleasant, do not forget about the heating side of your system. Southern Arizona winters may be mild compared with other parts of the country, but those chilly mornings and evenings will eventually arrive. Testing your heat before the first cold snap gives you time to address any problems before you are reaching for extra blankets.

Your HVAC system is one of the hardest-working systems in your home, especially during an Arizona summer. Fall provides a brief window to let it rest, catch up on maintenance, and make sure it is ready for the changing seasons ahead.

So, enjoy the open windows and cooler evenings while they last. Your HVAC system has earned the break, and a little attention now can help keep your home comfortable all year long.
